Ahmad Nizar Hamzeh: In The Path Of Hizbullah
One of the best books on Hizbullah (*****)
Fawaz A. Gerges: The Far Enemy : Why Jihad Went Global
Good background information on al-Qaeda and why the Islamists globalized their Jihad (****)
Robert Fisk: Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon
Lebanon's war as witnessed by Beirut-based Robert Fisk. Must read. (****)
Thomas L. Friedman: From Beirut to Jerusalem
Friedman's first and possibly last great book (****)
Moojan Momen: An Introduction to Shi`i Islam : The History and Doctrines of Twelver Shi`ism
Excellent introduction to twelver Shia Islam. (*****)
G. R. Hawting: The Idea of Idolatry and the Emergence of Islam : From Polemic to History (Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization)
The Origins of Islam revisited: Islam arose out of conflict with other monotheists. (****)
Alan Moore: V for Vendetta
"Authority, when first detecting chaos at its heels, will entertain the vilest schemes to save its orderly facade... But always order without justice, without love or liberty, which cannot long postpone their world's descent to pandemonium..." (*****)
Alan Moore: Watchmen
Another masterpiece by Alan Moore
Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Director): Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulin
Amelie sets out on a mission to make others happy. But what about herself? A must see. (*****)
Lila Says
Ziad Doueiri's best film to date. A coming-of-age tale centers on a Lolita-esque French teen who is a big tease to a shy Arab kid. (****)
The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition)
Possibly the best films ever. (*****)
The illegal acts will become even more brazen if the Army doesn't stand up to them now.

Thursday morning in Beirut. Looks like the unrest is continuing, and the government has yet to say anything or do anything...The very LEAST the PM could do is address the nation and say something. And the Army is still on the sidelines.
I'm not going to bother getting my hopes up for anything to happen, actually. I'm going to bed. Maybe by the time I wake up, Lebanon will have ceased to exist and we can all pretend it was a bad dream and move on with our lives.

Woe to those who NEVER EVER FRIGGING NEVER MEVER DEVER learn anything!
Saniora is on the phone, and traveling (meet to Bush?), and the gvmnt, according to Naharnet, is "considering" a state of emergency.
Like what should have been done before downtown tents, the army should have been clear and preventive BEFORE Hezbo took and shut down the airport.
Technically the gvmnt. fired an employee, rightly or wrongly, you just don't shut down the airport and threaten the gvmnt to reverse its decision.
But then Hezbo knows, and you know, and I know, that there won't be any state of anything.
Yallah Saniora keep wandering aimlessly ya z-b while the nation is lost. Yallah Suleiman, don't do your job cuz it might jeopradize your (har har) chance of becoming president of the Republic of my ass sometime in the next 20 years, while they dangle that stale carrot before your donkey face.
Yallah Sfeir, you saved your community's honor by keeping Lahoud in, and insisting on 2/3 election (i.e. NONE), and now you get to meet hapless W. 3 weeks before he leaves office.
You guys make us proud and your place is safe in the history books.

hang on there Josey Wales...
you can complain about Sfeir, Sleiman and Sanioura all you want ..... but the opposition cant ... and that has been their strategy all along....
dont know what good it's done us... but none the less!!
I tend to agree with how they went about things.... and as you can see... the opposition got minimal benefit... and now look where they find themselves...
meanwhile the International tribunal - the one thing the opposition was hell bent on getting rid of is still on track...
I think the government deserves some well earned praise!

What the hell are those guys smoking?
1:40 pm >The Higher Islamic Shiite Council said the only solution to end the unrest in Lebanon is for the government to back down from its decisions against Hizbullah
1:45 pm >Vice President of Higher Shiite Council Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan labeled a government decision against Hizbullah’s telecommunications network a “crime” and said it was a scheme to sow discord and facilitate Israel’s work.
They want a sectarian war or what?
Posted by: Jeha | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 07:06 AM
I sort of understand why they're not sending the Army with force to end all of this. There is fear that the Army would split.
So what do people do? Just weather the storm this time, so the thugs can get emboldened more the next time they decide to wreak havoc with the country? I think they've had enough chances for opportunities at "taswiyeh" and now it's time to say 'no' to their ways.

That's not good for global warming, all these burning tires. Can't Al Gore can do anything? :)
Posted by: RebLeb | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 07:58 AM
Jeha,
It has become openly Sectarian! I had mentioned it before that HA had become the defacto reop of Shia's in Lebanon...This is the proof!!
Posted by: danny | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 07:59 AM
Same old crap....This country wil never change, we're back to the dark ages!
Posted by: Andre | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 08:07 AM
This will end with a few MOABs (or worse) lobbed at HA in a year or two or three. Sad but I don't see another way of getting rid of this cancer. It is us or them now.
Posted by: RebLeb | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 08:21 AM
"It is us or them now."
That's not nationalism, that's pitiless sectarianism. What appeal has been made across sectarian lines for mutual understanding and consideration? Not much, in my opinion.
Posted by: Solomon2 | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Sol,
I somehow agree with you; however, it is up to the free Shiaa forces to come forward and denounce this terrorism and extortion! This is their golden opportunity to free themselves from the HA noose and breathe easier...Unfortunately; not to my knowledge; we have not seen a gathering of high profile politicians, scholars, intellectuals and others of the Shia faith coming out in inison and condemning not only the HA but the Higher Shiite council which has become a mouthpiece of HA...

Sorry for the typo...It should've read:
Unfortunately; not to my knowledge; we have not seen a gathering of high profile politicians, scholars, intellectuals and others of the Shia faith coming out in Unison and condemning not only the HA but the Higher Shiite council which has become a mouthpiece of HA...

Naharnet:
2:15 pm The Lebanese Army Command warned that if the present situation persists it would pose a threat to the military establishment’s unity.
sigh

Danny,
That's my concern. now shiite, tomorrow, alawite, the day after, buddhists... As Lebanon goes, so will the rest of the Middle East.
And even Bashar will not survive this hell.

Nasrallah is speaking now. He's talking in a conversational mode; he's trying to connect with his base. He's breaking down big issues to make them appear as if they're nothing. Suddenly he doesn't sound so holy.
Yes, Nasrallah, we want the weapons out. What's wrong with this request.
He just said that Fouad Siniora is an employee working for Jumblatt. Jumblatt is the Prime Minister. And Jumblatt works for Condoleeza Rice. Utter disgust!!

Danny, read this: http://www.nowlebanon.com/NewsArticleDetails.aspx?ID=41210
Posted by: hh | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 09:36 AM
It sounds really bad. It sounds like outright war now. Nasrallah is considering the communications network as part of its "resistance" weapons that they won't give up.
He just said that whoever reaches out to "our youth on the streets", we will cut their hands!
Posted by: Doha | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Nasrallah declared a decision: "we will not bow to anyone, not to any army around the world." his speech is inciteful and will have dire consequences. I can't do anything but pray now.
Posted by: Doha | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Hassan just declared outright war under the "term" of SELF DEFENCE. Anyone who tries to move us with the gun(I guess a reference to the security forces) will find the gun!!I guess the bullshit is finally over. The guns have turned inside under the self defence proclamation. I think this government should declare a state of emergency and send the army to remove these losers. This has become a game of chicken...The challenge has been set!
Posted by: danny | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:00 AM
one of the reporters at this dark and dreary press conference suggested the change of the airport's name to Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah airport.
Posted by: Doha | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:04 AM
"I can't do anything but pray now."
He wants you to think there is nothing you can do and be paralyzed by terror, Doha. So he can have his way with you and your country.
"We are the state, they are the gang, Nasrallah said."
What Nasrallah describes is neither "resistance", nor rebellion, nor conquest. It's rape. Lebanon is supposed to submit and let Nasrallah be its pimp so it can service Hezbollah's customers.

hh,
I had read about the visit to the congress. However, what we need is these people across all specrtrum to say that out load in LEBANON. Hassan today in his vulgar "speech" gave a "great" account of his leadership qualities, threatening to cut off hands left and right! The Shia in Lebanon deserve better leaders and representation than this two bit hood!!!
Posted by: danny | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Well, Solomon, from far and not being in Lebanon, I can't do anything right now but pray. That's unfortunate.
Posted by: Doha | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Is there no Lebanese out there who will openly proclaim that it's better to be a Western or even Zionist stooge and thus pull out the rug from under this mesmerizer?
Posted by: Solomon2 | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Bob, don't hope for anything from the army. The army must be either purged from Syranians sympathizers or M14 should start developping a military force of its own.
Posted by: Vox P. | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:30 AM
but...but... but... you promised not to turns his weapons agains Lebanese!
Posted by: Vox P. | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 10:36 AM
He's changed his promise. What do you expect when you make a deal with Darth Vader?
Posted by: Solomon2 | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 11:34 AM
How many more "warnings" will the Army issue before it takes action? two hundred?
Doha,
You're afraid the army's going to split up, so you don't use it? What kind of logic is that? What's the point of having an army if we can't use it? I'd rather have it split up in 2 than not having one at all.
I'm utterly disgusted today to add anything more. I'm trying to force myself not to read the news, in fact.
Today, I wish I had been born in some other country of the world, ANY other country but that shithole of a place.
Posted by: Bad Vilbel | Thursday, May 08, 2008 at 12:11 PM
"You're afraid the army's going to split up, so you don't use it? What kind of logic is that?"
Indeed. I daresay the unwillingness of the leadership to use the Army to re-establish order disrupts its morale more than anything else.
