I apologize to my readers for not posting anything in over 4 days. Vox called it, I "got a baby." Kais turned one month old today, and he's the best thing that has ever happened to this human. His birth changed my priorities, and the frequency of my posts, as I am sure you will understand. And with my day job imposing multiple deadlines on me, I barely have the time to blog these days. I do promise an update soon, however. Thanks for understanding.
I am guilty of not announcing Kais's birth on this blog. Consider this a belated announcement, and the following a consolation. This is from a draft that I wrote shortly after his birth, and that I never posted.
My Kais was born free. He will have the freedom I never had: the freedom to choose his own path in life, and the freedom to have no religion. He is born an individual, not part of a pack. What Kais will do with his freedom is entirely up to him. Maybe one day he will look back on his father’s past and understand some of the things that made him what he is. Maybe he won’t. That, too, is up to him. Maybe he will read these words and see the contradictions of a man juggling two worlds, trying to reconcile the repressive but comforting old world, with the free yet sometimes cold new world. And maybe he won't.
But I do hope, Kais, that you realize that out of these contradictions, and most importantly, out of love between two individuals who defied politics, geography and religious differences, the most beautiful being was born.
Welcome to your world, Kais.
