It seems to me that what some people still strive for communist ideals that have proven to be worthless and irrelevant in this day and age.
May Day in Beirut:
BEIRUT (AFP) - More than 5,000 people marched through Beirut to celebrate May Day, carrying loafs of bread in protest at government policies in a country suffering deep economic and political crises.
Demonstrators at the rally organised by the Communist party waved Lebanese and red Communist flags as well as banners denouncing "corruption, confessionalism and indebtedness."
OK so what is the solution? Communism? I don't think so. But check out this arresting photo from AFP. What a combination!
Meanwhile, here in the US, protestors took to the streets to demand equal rights for illegal immigrants.
More than 300,000 demonstrators marched in Chicago, and another 300,000 took to the streets of Los Angeles to shout their disapproval of House measures that would make it a felony to be in the country illegally and to help those who are. In the District, more than 1,000 people rallied at Meridian Hill Park -- also known as Malcolm X Park -- in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, and smaller rallies were held in Herndon, Alexandria and Baileys Crossroads
Snippets from NPR's All Things Considered:
Illegal kid: "We came to this country because we deserve a better life."
Anchor: "What do your parents do for a living?"
Illegal kid: "My mother cleans houses and my father fixes lamps."
I struggled yesterday to have someone explain to me why all of a sudden, illegal immigrants became "immigrants" and May Day was being described as a "Day without immigrants". I did go to work yesterday. I did not boycott my adopted country, which has been extremely good to me.
Lou Dobbs explains:
"We all awoke to headlines in our nation's most important newspapers reminding us that this is "A Day Without Immigrants." Not illegal immigrants, mind you, but immigrants.
...Major newspapers obviously don't want to disturb their readers with the information that today's demonstrations and boycott are about illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens...Most of the mainstream media has been absolutely co-opted by the open borders and illegal immigration advocates... only one newspaper, to its credit, reported that illegal aliens and their supporters' boycott of the national economy on the First of May is clear evidence that radical elements have seized control of the movement. The Washington Post, alone among national papers, reported that ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) has become an active promoter of the national boycott.
It seems that the "cause" of illegal immigrants has become a way for a few leftist radicals to promote... communism!
Just how significant is the impact of leftists within the illegal immigration movement? It is no accident that they chose May 1 as their day of demonstration and boycott. It is the worldwide day of commemorative demonstrations by various socialist, communist, and even anarchic organizations.
This may seem selfish, but as "legal alien", I don't identify with illegal immigrants or their cause, mostly because I actually had to go through a painful and costly process to enter this country, find a job and build a life for myself and my family. I still have not recovered from having to pay IRS more money in April on top of the enormous amounts they deduct every month from my salary (not that I am complaining, at least I get something in return. But boycott I won't!).
As for communism, well, let me put it this way: very few us are here today because of it!
